Who Am I? – the Astrology of Spiritual Awakening

What is it to awaken and discover our true nature and why do we long for it, yet resist it so much? Can we see enlightenment in the birthchart and what does it mean? Through examples of awakened and realised beings and their struggle to awaken to that, this lecture will be an exploration of the indicators of the spiritual potential inherent in each birthchart.

Included are the transits of outer planets, with a special focus on Chiron.

Transits: The Missing Keys to Accurate Forecasting

Most astrologers are familiar with using transits to make predictions. However the methods associated with using transits for prediction that have been taught over the last 50 years do not always enable accurate forecasts. There are several missing keys which, when properly utilised, transform the use of transits and progressions into an effective predictive tool. These ‘missing keys’ are simple and easy to learn.

In this lecture Peter Burns will demonstrate how to incorporate simple techniques to improve the predictive accuracy of your astrological forecasts. When these and other forgotten tools become part of your predictive toolkit, your ability to be of service to your clients will be improved.

The Descent of Mars – Our All Conquering Warrior … Embrace Your Fighter

To the Greeks Mars was known as Ares. He had the ignominious reputation of being the most disliked of all the Olympians. To the Romans he was originally known as Mavors and when combined with the Greek myth he became Mars, the lover of Aphrodite and the all conquering warrior. Jung describes Ares as the “principle of individuation”. In Jungian psychology, the development of the self is achieved by resolving the conflicts that arise at each of life’s transitional stages. In alchemical work or what is described as the Hermetic process, Gurdjieff makes use of the Chaldean order of the planets to descend to the fire within us.

In this lecture we will explore the essence of Mars to show how you can bring your personal warrior to light.

Money Changes Everything: economics of the self

Money changes everything, or does it? In this lecture we will explore money as a psychic reality which like all psychic realities is complex, complicated and problematic. As an archetypal image it is associated with the divine and we will explore this mythic connection. From this viewpoint, money is part of the soul and an aspect of fate; therefore astrological doctrines over time have considered this. Our focus during this lecture will be to reflect on money in the natal chart and our relationship and attitudes towards it. Perhaps by understanding the underlying images in our self we might better participate with money in the outer world.

Ensouling Place: being here now

Studies have shown that we humans generally identify place with safety, consigning it to either end of a spectrum that extends from security to isolation. Who can explain why we are drawn to certain places from a young age or have a penchant for moors or deserts while others are repelled by them. Why are some drawn to caves, others open spaces; some prefer cities, others villages. From a soulful perspective the natal and relocated charts can help to confirm the mystery of our feelings and reveal patterns to places that are significant in our lives. In this lecture we will consider place from the perspective of the soul using the natal and relocated chart to help us consciously cooperate with ensouling both our personal and our collective space through attending to and participating with where we are.

Traditional Medical Astrology and the Practice of Medical Horary

Medical horary like the decumbiture chart adheres to principles based on elemental or humoural harmony and the natural doctrine of correspondence. In this day and age the medical horary chart is far more practical to use than the decumbiture chart. It can help astrologers identify the humoural imbalances that are at the root of their client’s ill health and guide them to remedy those imbalances; from simple dietary or lifestyle changes, to appropriate treatment or the more critical timing of surgery.

Tempest & Tribulation: Australia & the Uranus-Pluto Cycle

Australia was discovered under the auspices of a Uranus-Pluto opposition and the seeds of the Enlightenment found fertile soil in the land down under. Those seeds of revolution, independence and self-sufficiency have helped shape the national character there has also been a fair share of brutality and oppression. How has Australia manifested both the positive and negative characteristics in its history and how can we understand and use them to further the national interest as we enter the next phase of national development.

Astrology has always labelled the twelfth house as a ‘bad’ house as it has associations with darkness and the unknown. In modern practice we struggle with understanding the meaning of the twelfth and the impact this has on the individual. This lecture explores the generic nature of the twelfth, the origin of its meanings and how planets in the twelfth and the ruler of the twelfth are the prime indicators as to how the individual experiences and also deals with the nature of sorrow and loss, of fear and isolation.

The Caliph’s Dream

This presentation explores how the transmission of ancient astrological treasures (and the ideals they represented) impacted upon, not only the timing, but also the site and design of the construction of Baghdad – a city purposefully built to act as a centre of wisdom in the Arabian world. The horoscope for Baghdad is often viewed as something of an astrological enigma, but with this historical understanding and the help of various Arabic texts and architectural reports, we begin to realise how deep the symbolic and astronomical significance was between a foundation chart and the city which emerged. This adds a whole new dimension to our understanding of this famous chart, and opens our eyes to the extent that astrological symbolism defined the architecture of the medieval world.

Connections in Time: the Horary Resolution Chart

A reliable assessment of timing is considered to be an advanced element of horary technique, but this presentation shows how the symbolism of time reveals itself very naturally once its principles are properly understood. Looking at several chart examples (historical and modern), we will see how connections between moments of enquiry and resolution can be quite stunning. Understanding the issues involved allows us to identify the best method for recognizing moments of significance, whilst affirming the value of horary and the wider astrological principle of how celestial cycles unfold meaning over time.

Dragons, Bears, Ploughs and Burials: the Wheel of Fortune in the Pole Stars
Star knowledge is best understood “by the heart” so this talk takes a visually rich tour through a host of information that helps astrologers understand the way constellations have been charted and put to use astrologically. Focussing on the northern polar constellation Ursa Major, it demonstrates key principles which build depth and breadth into all constellation meanings and secure our knowledge of celestial movements. Concluding with a comparative chart study, it also demonstrates the value of including prominent fixed stars in any type of chart work and the extent to which it is useful to do this.

Astrological Symbols and the Evolution of Consciousness

All languages are expressions of consciousness, and the language of astrology is particularly rich in this regard. With our symbols and techniques we can move between left and right brain modes of thinking and communicating, blending and balancing analysis with intuition, systems-based interpretation with mythic archetypes.

This double lecture explores how astrology can be a tool for understanding a vast topic: the evolution of consciousness. We shall look at some milestones in understanding this idea that consciousness itself is evolving, not just material manifestations of it such as the species of fauna and flora on earth. We shall touch on some great thinkers and a few of their great ideas. We shall spend some time considering the work of Clare Graves and his followers, which has given the world the system of spiral dynamics. But the heart of this talk is what it means to understand the varied expressions of consciousness through the symbols of astrology.

The symbols of astrology really do give us a meta-language for comprehending the great question of why we are here at all. Inspired by this spacious and compassionate understanding, we can start to find new ways for achieving re-growth from the ashes of greed and falsehood that dirty the modern world.

THE POWER OF I: Insight, Integrity, Intent

In-conjunct to the horizon of our experience are the 6th and 8th houses which challenge us to deepen our experience and expression of the self. Each of these developmental sectors confronts us with the task of being authentic and true to the self, cultivating our capacity for intimacy in relationships. In this experiential workshop we will use the images of the ascendant, sixth and eighth house cusps, their rulers, planets on the ascendant or in the 6th and 8th houses to help us become more aware of the power of our own integrity, and how we might be more intent with our own truth in the world. In the 2nd half of the workshop we will explore the planetary cycles through these sectors and how this symbolises awakening the authenticity of who we are.

Through the Eyes of Adolescence

In this lecture we explore the family passage from how we once viewed the world through the eyes of our children to the way we perceive the world through the lens of adolescence. Families with adolescents need to establish very different boundaries than families with younger children, as juveniles naturally expose the family to different values and ideals. How can parents accommodate the tension as their children develop into rebellious adolescents and find a place outside the family circle in the culture of their peers. While it is difficult to capture the intensity and complexity of adolescent angst, we will use the intelligence of astrological cycles to articulate this challenging passage.

The Greater Geometries of Mercury

Mercury inhabits a realm of linkages, language and mind. He is dualistic: being the most familiar and the most unknown of planets, slipping from realm to realm in the business of connection-making.

His phases are well known to us, but beyond that he has transits, as does Venus, and these transits form irregular yet definite patterns which are grouped into Saros-like series. His inferior conjunctions trace elemental triangles in the zodiac, which again form greater cycles rich in meaning. These über-circuits belong to the world of mundane astrology, where they may define cultural or commercial benchmarks.

Perhaps Mercury’s most fascinating sphere is that of language: the Sacred Word. The word creates, and as such Mercury is a creator who assists the Sun. The architects of modern policy have adopted linguistic dualism as a means of creation, as foreseen by George Orwell in his novel “1984” where the concept of double-think was introduced. Orwell himself had a ‘cyclical’ Mercury in his chart, conferring on him a mind worthy to expose the proclivities of a Sun-struck little planet.

Sedna and how we source energy

In April 1986 the core of reactor number 4 at Chernobyl exploded and caught fire in what was then the worst nuclear accident in history. In March 2011 there was a massive earthquake off the east coast of Japan that resulted in a tidal wave striking the coast at Fukushima and damaging the local Daiichi nuclear power plant. As an astrologer I was fascinated not so much by the similarities between these two charts, but by their marked differences. In the Chernobyl chart Uranus is within a degree of the Ascendant while in the Fukushima chart there is a wide stellium of Uranus, Sun and Mars in Pisces in the 8th house. Not surprisingly, Uranus is emphasised in both charts, but Sedna, the Inuit Goddess who can bring tsunamis, is prominent only in the Fukushima chart.

Sedna is a red tinged body that is thought to be located in the Oort cloud. In myth Sedna is an Inuit Goddess who demands that we respect the natural world and each other. She punishes with earthquakes, tsunamis and the removal of the sea mammals and fish which the Inuit have traditionally relied on. This talk will look at the charts of the two nuclear accidents with emphasis on Sedna and what may be a final warning about how we source energy.

Cycles of Change: The 9 Ages

Generational change withint a society is evident, but what energetic forces drive the consciousness of individuals within a specific period of time? Each individual has their own destiny; however, there are overriding tendencies in every 20 year period that apply en masse. This can be seen in the Chinese astrological cycles called the 9 Ages. They form a cycle of dramatic change which influence not only world events, new technologies and discoveries, but the thinking and behaviour within societies.

This lecture will provide you with an additional tool to broaden your understanding of why things happen when they do. An introduction to the gradual evolvement of energies throughout the current cycle will be revealed, leading to a more focused examination of the trends and the mindsets of the current Age, followed by a brief progressive exploration into the future.

To my knowledge this lecture will be breaking new ground, as this theory of the 9 Ages has not been applied on this scale, in this manner, previously.

“You are Me & I am You”: Understanding Repetitive Patterns in Relationships

We all have the Shadow archetype within and a confrontation with the Shadow is essential for self awareness along the pathway of individuation. We cannot learn about ourselves if we do not learn about our Shadow, otherwise, we are going to attract it through the mirrors of other people. This lecture takes you on your own personal shadow dance and journey through the 7th House to explore anima/animus projections, open enemies and committed partnerships.

“Logically the opposite of love is hate, and of Eros, Phobos (fear); but psychologically it is the will to power. Where love reigns, there is no will to power and where the will to power is paramount, love is lacking. The one is but the shadow of the other” . . . Carl Gustav Jung

Sedna – Dark Goddess of the sea

A new celestial object orbiting the Sun beyond Pluto was discovered in November 2003 and was given the name of Sedna, the Inuit goddess of the sea, who in mythology is said to live at the bottom of the sea. You are invited to a lecture of discovering how Sedna’s mythological story can heal the wounded spirit of the feminine within humanity at this amazing time of evolution on our planet. The integration of male and female must occur in order to bring balance to the earth and human consciousness. The two are not apart. It is necessary for a dialogue to occur so the pain of both male and female may be brought to light and transmuted. Sedna demands that we (humanity) return to a conscious sustainable relationship with nature so that we all participate in the caring and the use of the Earth’s resources. Her story also reminds us that we have all been victimised by something, by patriarchal institutions, discrimination on race, gender, sexual preference, religion or colour. She reminds us that we are too precious and necessary in this dance of life to waste valuable energy and time being a victim.

In this lecture we will be exploring how Sedna in our own charts symbolises ‘where the depths of the unconscious can be brought to the light of conscious awareness, to be healed’.

Most of the time we don’t have a conscious clue as to what those stories are and how much power they have on our lives . . . including our emotions. Transits to Mercury and the 3rd house are prime times for shifting or changing these narratives; taking a look at old mind-sets and opinions that no longer serve us in a healthy way. How does a soul or individual break free from lifetimes of conditioned behavior? Since the nature of evolution seems to be slow with periods of rapid and sudden growth – Uranus isthe planet that describes the process of liberation. The Uranus/Pluto Cycle: Waking Up to Power

A topic which I think is appropriate for the times, given the current transiting Uranus/Pluto square. It is also appropriate to the theme of the conference, as it will touch upon ecological ramifications of human invention. In this talk, using the imagery of the cycle of Uranus and Pluto over the centuries, I will explore the history of the human striving for independence from tyranny, both political and mortal, demonstrating how the results of ingenious artifice can end up spiralling out of control. Focus will be placed on current controversies surrounding two particular examples: nuclear energy and the corporation. In these matters, the collective faces a dilemma of whether we can find a path to evolve that pays due respect to forces that transcend human lifetimes.

Over the Rainbow to Chiron Healing

In 1977 when Charles Kowal discovered an orbiting body between Saturn and Uranus, astrologers were introduced to Chiron. Since discovery of this “new kid on the block” astrologers have come to appreciate the great influence Chiron seems to have with regard to matters of personal and global healing.

In mythology Chiron was a wounded Centaur who, in giving kindness, suffered a mortal wound. He became a healer who developed problems with self-healing. Chiron’s gift is the ability to see what needs healing, from the point of view of his own wound.

Like Chiron, the Centaur, we as healers have increased opportunity to assist others in their healing. At the same time we will need to take care of ourselves in the process and remember to “walk our talk”. Giving and receiving are like the “in” and the “out” breath; BOTH equally important. So, take a big breath in and come along as Christina takes you down the road then over the rainbow towards understanding your own Chiron healing story.

The Hidden Language of Antiscia

The astrology chart can be likened to a delicate eco-system: the health and vitality of the individual is maintained not only through balancing the different requirements of the planets, but also by recognising the special co-dependent relationships they have with one another. Antiscia is one such relationship – often overlooked in terms of modern astrology – but it was once critical in discovering if a unique connection existed between two planets. This technique is symbolic of one of the oldest divisions of the zodiac via the solsticial and equinoctial points; dividing both the year into four seasons, and the chart itself by these four points. In this lecture the principle of antiscia is explored through its history and its application, using chart examples to illustrate its significance as a hidden language that lies within the chart.

The History of Greenpeace Australia Pacific

Greenpeace’s first direct action in Australia opened on 28 August 1977, at Albany, Western Australia against Australia’s last whaling station. Over the next three weeks, activists used small inflated boats to place themselves between the harpoons of the three whale chaser ships and sperm whales up to 30 miles offshore. There were two near misses with harpoons but no injuries. Australians harpooned their last whale—a female sperm whale—on 20 November 1978. The Cheynes Beach Whaling Company ended operations the next day and the company site became Whaleworld, a museum, tourist attraction and educational centre on Australia’s now defunct whaling industry.
