Field of dreams

[fb_like]

When organising an event, whether it be a weekend seminar, one of my Greek trips or a conference, I often relate to Kevin Costner’s character in Field of Dreams; mainly the episode in the movie when he is walking through the cornfield and hears a voice that whispers to him, “If you build it, he will come” and then he has a vision of a baseball diamond. This becomes his field of dreams.

Field of dreams

I did play baseball, but am not a great baseball fan and truly I am not inclined to hear voices, so my connection to Kevin’s character is metaphorical. That is, if you try your best to create a place for something to happen, it will. Well we tried our best to create a space for the 19th FAA International Conference to happen and it did. Once it’s all set it place you really have to let go of control and let it happen. And that’s why I would like to thank every one of you who helped make it happen, especially the wonderful delegates who attended the conference and participated in the experience.

Participation is one of the words I often use to describe what can come about when one willingly enters into a space to allow something to happen. Astrology is one of the few remaining living disciplines that allows us to experience what we are studying, learning and perceiving on all levels simultaneously. As we learn more about who we are it reveals itself in some way. It is participatory learning in all senses when we let it be. That’s why coming to a conference is not just a great opportunity to learn with some of the best teachers in the world, but it also offers the opportunity to participate with the magic of astrology and let it reveal itself to us. I sincerely hope you were able to involve yourself and deepen your understanding of this sacred science.

I was thrilled with the first-class faculty, not only because they were great teachers and quite amazing astrologers, but that they engaged with everyone, shared openly and generously, had interactive discussions amongst themselves and presented a united body as astrologers. Whether they were talking about a 16th C technique, a TNO, a precise detail or a subjective experience, I felt that they all were highly professional and I thank each one of our speakers for not only being passionate about what they do, but also for taking their roles as leaders of our field, our field of dreams. David and Cassandra from Redwood Entertainment who recorded the conference lectures were blown away by the quality of lectures. Having never heard astrology presented in this way before they thanked me for contracting them and said they had an enormous respect for what we were doing and had no idea the depth and breadth of astrology.

What also was very important for me was that there were many younger astrologers not only as delegates, but also on the faculty. Having had my vocation in astrology for nearly 40 years and having worked professionally as an astrologer for 28 years I look back at the amazing changes in our field in that time and then I look forward and imagine the experiences that lay ahead for them. How exciting and also to know that this new generation of astrologers have some elders they can bounce things off.

Melanie and Glennys

In preparing and working at the conference I had lots of support and would like to thank my partner Glennys Lawton who is always there to help and support and is wisely sensible and boundaried when I am too Libran or too Neptunian. And so competent and insightful at what she does. And to Barbara Thorp who simply speaking is our national treasure in Australian Astrology – Barb works tirelessly and without complaint (well a few – she is an Aries!) for the organisation of Australian astrology and everyone in the field owes her a big thank you for all she has done to help the continuation of the astrological tradition in Australia. And a very sincere thanks to the VAA Committee who also worked so hard to ensure the conference’ success: Kath did the program and the CD orders; Susan helped out at the trade fair and IT; Cheryl did the name tags and helped with taping and IT; Nikki got the website going, made sure the IT schedule was up, the microphone was there; Duane did those fabulous photos at the closing ceremony and they will be on the website; Valeria helped pack the bags and worked at registration and Glorija was there to lend a hand when it was needed. And thanks to all the committee for being there when necessary. And to all the others who just stepped up when we needed a hand, thanks. I said the FAA was the Family of Australian Astrologers and we are – we are a community. And this is important to know: we are a strong community and we know that others share our understanding even if most of the world out there does not.

Demetra George remarked to me, but also to many others, that she loves coming to Australia because we all like each other. And as you looked around the dining room and saw the conversations and interactions who could doubt it. Well it is because we have had brilliant and magnificent leaders in the FAA who have worked so hard – Anita Ings has been the national president for 6 years and during her time the FAA has grown so much stronger, you might have met Sylvia Wilson the FAA Secretary who supports and sorts everyone out. Sylvia is indispensable and an ear whenever we need one. You might have bought a book from Noelle Rattray at the FAA Zodiac Conference Bookshop. Noelle has also been an enormous support for 25 years; not only our legal eagle, Noelle is now our National President. These three Graces, sometimes Fates, never Furies, along with Barbara Thorp are the national executives who give so much of their personal time to make the container for astrology strong in Australia.

Demetra and Ben

And now as the year 2012 starts to unfold I wish you all the very best for the journey forward. And Cosmos willing we will see one another again in Hobart in 2014. Our 20th International Conference will be in Hobart, a fantastic location and Tasmania, a jewel. I do have one favour to ask – please register and pay in full as early as you can, as it makes it so much easier for the convenors. To Noelle and her team, all our best wishes from all of us at the 19th International Conference – we’ll see you on the Emerald Isle.

Frank and Evelyn

Weren’t the three fates (Melanie, Verena and Demetra) great at the closing, weaving new threads for us to take with us – the conference photos will be on the website for you to have a look at. Also, the CDs of the conference are available and you’ll be able to place an order online – they will be listed under Conference CDs. Or you can post in the order form that will be with the March journal.

For now, my very best wishes,

Brian Clark

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE COMMENTS WE HAVE RECEIVED

Thank you for everything I had a really great time at the conference I loved all the speakers my brain is nice & full.

Thank you so much for a wonderful conference. I thoroughly enjoyed being at the trade display, although I also longed to be at the great talks. You may have seen all the problems but I talked to everybody that came by and all were very happy, in fact, they were delighted with everything. I did not hear one word of complaint; only satisfaction and joy.

Congratulations on a truly wonderful conference. It was really well organized and I had the best time.

Thank you so much for making this conference happen. I found it incredibly stimulating and enjoyable.

Thank you for a wonderful conference.

Thanks for the great conference!

The conference was a gem

Firstly, congratulations to yourself and team for a fabulous conference. It was a great first time for me and I hope to be able to attend many in the future.

Congratulations for a wonderful FAA conference and to all the organising team./p>

Thanks for a great conference Brian – well done to the VIC FAA Team!
You could see the hard work and effort – hope you are all recovering this week.

Just want to say thanks for organizing a wonderful conference…Glennys too
Not that we expected any different!

Thank you for the Conference and all you put into it. It was a raging success and you should be congratulated.

Thank you, to you and everyone else on your team, for a wonderful Conference.
I found it nourishing on many different levels, and have returned home with a strong sense of renewal and reinvigorated focus.

Great Conference I am so inspired feeling transformed and thank you for a fantastic conference.

The Conference approaches

12-01-12

Happy New Year everyone and hopefully your preparations for the conference are going smoothly; a week today we will have begun. The future that was two years ago when we started planning the conference is now nearly the present. And as the conference approaches the time seems to speed up. So it will be no time until we are all in Melbourne at University College for what I imagine will not only be a quantum learning experience but a marvellous interactive social experience with people who share your language of astrology.

Registrations are now closed. We have reached our target capacity for the conference and no more conference tickets are available. The Pub night on Saturday is also full as is Deborah Houlding’s workshop. We have set a target to endeavour to create a sense of space for your best possible experience. Now we keep our fingers crossed that all will run as smoothly as possible.

The Victorian Astrologers Association and the Federation of Australian Astrologers are the sponsors of the conference. Due to insurance and registration requirements it is necessary for all conference delegates to be members of the FAA so please ensure that your membership is current. If you have not become a member it will be necessary to join on finalising your registration. The FAA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting astrology for all levels of interest and application. As a non-profit organization, the conference workers on the registration desk, the room monitors and all our helpers are all volunteers. This is the 19th international conference the FAA has sponsored and the organisation continues to strive to offer structure, coherence and a meeting place for astrology and astrologers.

Many of you will be at the pre-conference workshop with Robert Hand on the 18th at the Abbotsford Convent. Others will enjoy the pre-conference workshops on Thursday. However, I would invite those of you who can to come to our ‘official’ opening at 1.05 pm on Thursday. Then we will have an address at 4.50 pm with Robert Hand followed by the cocktail party.

Upon registration you will receive your conference bag and program. Those of you who have registered for the extras (the lunches, cocktail party and pub night) will have this listed on the back of your nametag; therefore it will be important to have this on you at all times. Those who have bought individual tickets for lunch etc. will have a separate card for these events. Your nametag will be necessary for entry into the lectures as well.

For delegates who may need to contact the conference please note these two mobile phone numbers:
BARBARA THORP – 0417 534 436
GLENNYS LAWTON – 0433 575 988

Lectures will be filled on a first-come basis. While we have endeavoured to plan the room allocation as best as possible we cannot guarantee that seats will always be available, as the rooms will range in size from 25 – 125! Therefore arrive early to the lecture if you do not want to be disappointed.

Our conference ends on Sunday; however there will be post-conference workshops on Monday. At 6.39 that evening the New Moon ushers in the Chinese New Year of the Dragon.

Chinese New Year of the Dragon

And finally Melbourne weather! We say we can have four seasons in a day and lately we have been having exactly that. Long range forecast is that it will be hot on the 17th and 18th but then it stays around the minimum of 17 and the maximum of 28C. Cloud, some rain, so pack an umbrella and expect unpredictable weather.

All that seems left now is to enjoy your time. Looking forward to meeting you,

Brian Clark

2012 FAA CONFERENCE: Weaving the Fabric of Time

December 23, 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and everyone the joy of the Holiday Season. Whatever your beliefs or attitudes are about this time of year, it is a sacred point in the wheel of the year and therefore my best wishes for a safe and blessed period. May 2012 also bring the gift of being and the rewards of acceptance –

And I will look forward to meeting each one of you at our conference in January which we are really looking forward to presenting. May the light of this season be with you,

Brian Clark

December News Update

Time is running out; There’s no time like the present; Time is on my side; Ain’t it funny how time slips away: Who knows where the time goes; I’ve had the time of my life

Time; sometimes a mystery, sometimes our master. Some-times there’s not enough time; sometimes it takes forever. Pericles the great architect of the Parthenon said ‘time is the wisest counsellor of all’. Being astrologers, it is central to our craft and for this reason, coupled with the mystique surrounding 2012, we chose our theme Weaving the Fabric of Time. How we participate with time is somewhat akin to how we weave our fate.

We all have different concepts and beliefs about how time and astrology work; however, in the end, the subjective experience of both time and astrology can accommodate all these beliefs and ideas. Hence our lecture tracks are time-themed:

  • Chronus: Real Time
  • Kairos: At the Right Time
  • Synchronous: Together at the Same Time
  • Dreamtime: Soul Time
  • Sidereal Time: Astrological Techniques through Time

All types of astrology are woven through the program.

Birth Time? And what about the time we start: the chart of the conference? Well the conference will move through time. Our first time is pre-conference time when we open the Robert Hand workshop on Wednesday, January 18th at 10 am at the Abbotsford Convent. On Thursday morning many of you will be attending the workshops with Ben, Michael or Melanie also starting at 10 am that morning. The registration desk will be open from 8 am and we will have an official opening at 1.05 that afternoon. This is more a convenient time than an elected time as the National Executive meeting and the workshops will break for lunch and will be able to attend the opening. We have planned a short but interesting opening. At 4.50 pm that afternoon we will kick off the lectures with Robert Hand and following we will have an informal opening with a Meet the Speakers cocktail party to socialise and play! Is time fixed or fluid? Will each chart reveal a glimpse of what might be?

Time of arrival?
If you send me a quick email with your time of arrival including the Airline and Flight number we will attempt to match up people who are arriving at the same time so you can taxi share. We will put you in contact with one another via email to firm that up.

Conference Times: Upon registration you will receive your conference bag along with your program which will outline all the lecture times and lecture rooms – the names of our lecture rooms honour some of our astrological elders: Claudius Ptolemy, Guido Bonatti, William Lilly, Johannes Kepler and Dane Rudhyar and inside the program will be a map for you. There will be two sittings for lunch which will ease congestion so we will ask that everyone sticks to their assigned lunch time.

As I mentioned in the last newsletter we have had one schedule change and the new lecture details are on the website along with the new amended conference program. We have also released a limited number of one-day and two-day tickets if you have any friends who may be interested.

Unfortunately, Spica Books – who is usually at all our conferences – is unable to come to the trade fair. As a result, the Zodiac Conference Bookshop has been born and will have its beginning at the conference. This bookshop is administered by the FAA for its members and we will endeavour to have as many of the speaker’s books, classics and new ones as possible.

We will be in touch with everyone early in the New Year to confirm all your accommodation details as well as how to get to the colleges, as well as any other information that you might need.

In signing off I would like to wish you all the best for the times to come as we enter into the festive season, the solstice period: Happy Holidays and all the best for the New Year of 2012.

November Newsletter

2012 FAA CONFERENCE: Weaving the Fabric of Time
November 22, 2012

Finally, an overdue update! Apologies for the time lapse since the last newsletter, but from the middle of September to late October I was in Greece and since coming home I have been catching up. But with only a few days left for the final early bird I wanted to remind everyone that Mercury turns retro early evening on Thursday November 24th and we will honour the early bird rate up until Friday when we will change the registration form on the website. Don’t hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions –

All is on track for the conference – while both the planning and then the launching of the conference is enormously exhilarating, it is also extremely anxiety-provoking at times, questioning whether all the final details have been attended to and everything is ready to roll. However I am sure it will be, as all the committee endeavours to do their best. In the past the conferences have always had a life of their own, as the delight at reconnecting with friends and the enjoyment of being able to be with people speaking your language takes over. The FAA Conferences have their own culture which is always friendly and fun, along with learning curves and inspired moments. So if something is important to you please let us know. Below is some news about the conference and as soon as early bird registration is completed I will be back in early December with more –

PROGRAM CHANGE
What we can always expect when planning are changes. The only program change I have to announce at this time is that unfortunately Anne Button will not be speaking due to a recent operation. We certainly wish Anne all the best for a speedy recovery and do hope she is able to attend the conference, as Anne’s presence always lights up the room.

But we are blessed to be able to welcome Dr. David Juste back to Melbourne as a conference speaker – in 2009 David gave a weekend seminar for Astro*Synthesis on The Astrological Renaissance which was superb.

Dr. David Juste

Dr. David Juste was born in Belgium to a mother who introduced him to astrology at an early age. He received a high distinction for his Bachelor of Arts in History, writing his thesis on astrology in the middle Ages. His MA (Harvard University) thesis was titled The Study of Medieval Astrology: Achievements and Outlook. In 2000 he received his Doctor of Philosophy (History) from the University of Bruxelles, again exploring ancient astrological techniques. Dr. David Juste has extensive experience in astrological manuscripts and spends his time in the libraries of Europe cataloguing these. David has taught many interesting programs and written extensive articles on medieval cosmology, the uses of astrology, medieval astronomy and astrological influences on art. If any other program changes do happen, they will be posted on the website.

FLIGHT ARRIVALS
For those of you arriving at Tullamarine or Avalon airports and coming straight to either International House or University College could you please send in your flight arrival details to me at astrosynthesis@bigpond.com – this will help us keep track of arrivals. We are planning on emailing everyone who is arriving around the same time and put you in contact with each other to see if you would like to share a taxi – please let us know your arrival details and also if I can share your email with other delegates arriving about the same time as you.

ROBERT HAND WORKSHOP January 18, 2012

As previously announced this workshop is full. The venue will be the Abbotsford Convent and transportation will be available to and from the venue from International House and University College. The Abbotsford Convent houses a wing of alternate therapists so if you also wanted to coordinate your visit with any other of the treatments available or if you are just interested in the venue go to: http://www.abbotsfordconvent.com.au/wellbeing. On site there are many places to have lunch or coffee, have time out, take a relaxing walk along the Yarra or visit the children’s farm.

PRE and POST CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS
Some of the workshops are filling fast so to avoid disappointment please register early. All pre and post conference workshops will be held at University College.

CONFERENCE DAY TICKETS
At time of writing we have not yet released any day tickets for the conference, as projections are that we may well reach our capacity. Therefore only a handful of day tickets will be released so please keep in touch with the website. And if you are certain that you will be attending the conference, it is best to register as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

ACCOMMODATION
Single student rooms are still available at the conference venue from the 18-23. If you are coming in earlier or staying after accommodation is available at International House. However under FAQ we have also listed many other accommodation options.

FINAL CONFIRMATION
In January we will be contacting you to confirm all your bookings and registration details –

But for now, where’s that eclipse?

My best wishes,

Brian Clark
FAA Conference Coordinator

More September News

We have had such a great response to Robert Hand’s workshop that unfortunately we are unable to take any further registrations for this workshop. The other workshops are filling fast as well so if you are interested please register earlier, rather than later, in order not to be disappointed.

Accommodation at University College is available from the 18-23, but dates before and after these are unavailable at this venue. However we can accommodate you at International House so please let us know your accommodation needs. And please check with the FAQ on the website for accommodation updates.

Interstate delegates – when you know your date and time of arrival at Melbourne airport, please let us know as we can match you with other delegates arriving on the same plane or at a similar time in order for a taxi share. Those arriving at the airport on Wednesday morning who are going straight to Robert Hand’s workshop can taxi share. Or if you are arriving later, let us know your details and if you would like to be in contact with others to share a taxi to University College.

Thanks

2012 FAA CONFERENCE: Weaving the Fabric of Time

Before we know it we will all be together for our biennial gathering of the clan: an astrological jamboree of sorts where people will actually understand what you are talking about. Astrologese will be the main language spoken, albeit there will be quite a few dialects given the breadth of the vernacular. We are working to create an engaging and welcoming space and invite you to participate in it.

In this edition of the journal our featured speaker Robert Hand has written an insightful article What are we doing Anyway? inviting us to reflect and delve deeper into what we do with our craft. We are delighted to welcome Robert Hand back to Oz where he has been one our favourite overseas presenters in the past. Robert Hand will be giving an all day workshop before the conference begins and this is filling fast. We expect this workshop to be filled, so we are suggesting early registration in order not to be disappointed. The pre-conference and conference lectures will be the only presentations Robert will be doing this time in Australia.

Robert Hand

We have also changed the venue for Robert Hand’s workshop to the Abbotsford Convent as this is a beautiful venue and a great place to enjoy your day with Robert. Transportation will be available from University College to take our out-of-towners to the venue and bring them back. Plus there will be many locals available to help assist you to the venue. The committee thought it would be a great place to spend the day in this wonderful setting. As you enter the precinct you are taken back in time. Since astrologers come here to classes or seminars it also has become affectionately known as Hogwarts. As well the convent houses a wing of alternate therapists so if you also wanted to coordinate your visit with any other of the treatments available or if you are just interested in the venue go to: http://www.abbotsfordconvent.com.au/wellbeing. On site there are many places to have lunch or coffee, have time out, take a relaxing walk along the Yarra or visit the children’s farm.

ABBOTSFORD CONVENT
Abbotsford Convent

I would recommend that you visit our website http://www.faainc.org.au/faa-conference-2012 and subscribe to our newsletter at the bottom right-hand corner of the home page. Every time the website changes you will be advised automatically and I try and keep in touch with news as I know it!

The lecture schedule and timetable is now posted for each conference day. As you can see our conference program is packed with exceptional speakers who are offering exciting lectures, seminars and workshops; therefore it has been a huge task to arrange the schedule. Making choices will be tough; I sympathise with Libras trying to make their selections. However all the lectures will be recorded and there will be lots to discuss with your friends and colleagues during the breaks.

Good quality comfortable student rooms are still available; however if student accommodation is not your thing then on the website we have listed other accommodation nearby (see FAQ). All the apartments that we have been able to hold in other colleges have now all been booked.

The next early bird date is November 24 when Mercury turns and our planning and organising enters the final stage. Therefore I would invite you to register as early as possible because we will have a limit on the amount of attendees we will be able to accept. At this time we will also make the decision whether we will release one day or two day tickets.

All the best,

Brian Clark
FAA Conference Coordinator

I cannot sign off without acknowledging the loss of one of the VAA’s dearly loved and respected colleagues. Neville Lang died on the 28th of April and he will be truly missed by his astrological community as he gave so much of himself. Neville convened the 2000 FAA Conference in Melbourne and we keep his spirit alive in our memory.

An Astrological Symposium

With Mercury retrograde it is a great time to backtrack over any news about the conference. On a personal note this Mercury R is exactly opposite my natal Mercury R so I hope I will remember what it is I wanted to say!

Having subscribed to the newsletter you will automatically receive any new pages that go up on the site. Therefore over the past few weeks you would have received four new pages from our trade fair exhibitors introducing themselves and their products. These are automatically generated from our website and are not personal ads. The trade fair lists the exhibitors who will be with us, including the team from Solar Fire at Esoteric Technologies and Spica Books who distribute the Mountain Astrologer as well as new and out of print books.

We also welcome another international speaker from the UK.

Frank Clifford

Frank Clifford

Frank Clifford who runs the London School of Astrology will be doing two lectures during the conference. Many of you will already know Frank, but maybe you don’t know that you do. When you are searching the data of famous people you might go to the Clifford file on Solar Fire where you find all the famous and infamous names and their birth data! Frank compiled this data over years. As well as teaching at his school in London, Frank is a palmist and prolific writer.

I was speaking recently to Robert Hand who is looking very forward to his journey to Oz.

Robert Hand

Robert Hand

Robert first came to Australia in 1984 for the Melbourne conference at Monash. Ironically this was my first trip to Oz as well; some memories there! Robert’s pre-conference workshop is very popular and we will limit numbers so early registration is advised.

We will be releasing the conference schedule of lectures and their times after the next early bird registration.

Many thanks to Pauline Hepburn, who has designed a promotion of our conference for You Tube.
Pauline was one of our nine muses for the Brisbane conference who worked tirelessly to make the last conference the success that it was. Pauline designed a promo for the 2010 conference and again she has put her creativity to work, so my thanks Pauline.
