Tribute to Duane Eaks

It is with a great deal of sadness that we notify members that our dear colleague Duane Eaks passed away on 28 April.

Duane was a native of Olathe, Colorado, USA. He came to Australia as a Science and Maths teacher, having completed a BA in Chemistry and Maths at the University of Northern Colorado, followed by an MA in Counselling and Guidance at the University of Northern Colorado and a Doctorate of Education (Counselling Psychology) at the University of California, Berkeley. This led him to work as a Senior Lecturer and Counselling Psychologist at RMIT.
Duane was a member of the VAA from 1980 and served as Treasurer, Secretary and President during his 42 years of membership.

He was a National Representative for Victoria on the FAA National committee from 1982 and served as National Secretary, and Public Officer, and later as President and Vice President. Duane’s service to the FAA has been amazing and in recognition of his significant contribution he was made an Honorary Life member of the FAA in 2002.

Duane was also a very talented photographer and won many International awards and was “Resident Photographer” for the FAA Conferences and National AGM meetings.

In 1991 Duane wrote ‘The Student Project Guide on Astrology’. This was a basic introduction to Western Astrology that could be sent out in response to queries from the public. He generously donated the text to be used as the basis of the booklet that was published by the VAA in 2012 as ‘An Introduction to Astrology’. Duane also provided the photographs for the cover of the booklet. This material is now accessible on the VAA website.
On behalf of the VAA, Duane followed the model rules set out in the Consumer Affairs Act of 2012 to rewrite the Constitution and became the “expert to go to” regarding queries concerning both the VAA and FAA Constitutions.

In truth, no member has given more service to the VAA and FAA as Duane, and we will miss him a great deal.

VALE DR. DUANE EAKS

We at the Australian Academy of Astrology & Cosmobiology are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Duane, a kind and generous spirit who shared his knowledge and expertise with everyone.

Duane commenced his study of astrology with us in 1977 and went on to develop his studies with Doris Greaves and many others, making him an ideal candidate for the high positions he achieved in his working life and in the FAA.

Duane became counter-corrector for the first astrology examination I conducted for AAAC students in 1985 and continued until his health started to decline. He was very popular with our students and attended the presentation nights to hand out Certificates, providing advice and encouragement to all.

Despite his poor health, he recently kindly re-examined the previous examination papers of two former students to confirm their status for the AAAC Diploma award. Both awards were for service to astrology.

Dear friend, we will miss you. Let your soul fly free.
